Lots of activities are there to increase concentration including games to be played with them. Joining a sport of eye-hand coordination is also a good idea. Reduction of screen time is essential.

My son is 4.8 years old and he doesn’t have any behaviour or OT issues, but he only understands few of our language commands and has speech delay. What should I do to improve his state. He also cannot identify things much.

Do some speech therapy activities. OTMOM is a good site to find few.

My daughter gets hyper and angry very fast. After she gets angry she starts shouting at others, usually at home, not outside. But she calms down quickly if explained. She gets angry on small little things as well. Any thing not happening her ways(logical or illogical doesn’t matter) she tends to get angry. What should we do to control her anger? (Girl, 5 years 3 months)

My son is 4.9 years, he was diagnosed to be autistic at around 3 years. We have been doing speech and occupational therapy since then. There is improvement in receptive language, but not expressive language. Also, he is not grasping concepts for example, he is not able to identify colors, alphabets etc even after repeatedly teaching him.

Regular one to one remediation will help. Get behavioural modification plan done from expert and ask them how you should help the child at home. You can also join a support group.

How do we get to know if the child has some learning disabilities?

Any struggle in reading , writing or mathematics could be LD. Is child at par with classmates, is he enjoys going to school and other matters can indicate so.

Make a behavioural modification plan.. get involved. Ask for this to be done at home. Monitor diet. Remediation one to one will help.

Will writing practice help to reduce hyperactivity?

Sport like swimming, running, yoga will help too.

My son has great difficulty with languages like Hindi and Marathi written. What does this indicate?

He may be LD or not. Develop interest with activities, let him watch children movies, read stories with them in that language.

Many remedial teachers prefer doing the remedial classes in groups- is it worth?

I doubt. It depends on the level of LD of the child and the expertise of the teacher. Ask them to witness one of such sessions and judge for yourself.

My child is hyperactive and quickly gets angry. He has low patience levels. What can be done to reduce this? (Boy, 5.6 years)

Get Psychological evaluation done. Schools should not only complain but also ask them what is their plan to handle academics. Attention issues are beyond the child’s control, everyone else has to roll sleeves and help child.

Can ADHD be reversed if intervention is done at an early age like 3 to 4 years?

It can stay in control if child develops coping strategies. It doesn’t go away, but child learns to keep in tab.

My son is 3.11 years old and is very hyperactive. He always wants to run here and there. He is on GFCF diet and OT is going on. Need based speech is present. Conversation absent. Just focus on communication and exposure to language, reading and writing will follow.

My son is 11 years old, is quite clear in all his concepts but at times he makes few mistakes even on the concepts he knows. I ask him , but his reply is "he forgot ". At times , it seems he is even making deliberate mistakes. In maths, he reads some other number, but in copy writes some other number. My query is "how to improve his concentration "? He has a younger male sibling and at times my elder one treats him irrationally.

Get behavioural modification plan. Let him be very focused to this months top three issues and work together as a team. Join a support group. There are no deliberate mistakes. All are genuine, get assessment done and being submissive is not bad as per say.

Explain teachers how she is. They have to have different plans to keep her engaged. Let her experiment on her own as it looks like she is a hands on learner.

What strategies can be used emphasizing less on being hyperactive, and more on lack of concentration.

Concentration improvement activities , brain gym activities, swimming helps in this. There are thousands of activities on the internet. You can choose as per your child’s liking.

My son is 11 years old and is talented in school. However, many complaints have been coming from school and he wants to change his school. Is it a right decision to change his school?

Losing friends , change in environment affects child. If ICSE board some children can’t cope then you might think of changing. Ask around what are schools policies to help LD and ADHD children. Do they have counsellors, remedial teachers, special educator on role as it is mandatory now.

My daughter is 8 years old and many times she copies wrong maths number from her notebook itself and because of that she loses her marks instead of knowing how to calculate.

This is a typical dyslexia issue. Help her to colour code while copying. Ask her to recheck what she had copied. Or get written work from some other child, knowing concepts is learning not copying from board.

I have one boy in my class, who is around 4 years old. He is having certain difficulties like late speaking and has very less concentration towards studies. Sometimes I notice that he is getting hyper or getting irritated and hits other children within no time. This has particularly been observed when the other child makes any noise like shouting, crying. A renowned doctor has diagnosed him as mild autism but parents are yet to take their second opinion. In that case how to find out what triggers the child which instigates the child to hit someone. Now a days I am trying to keep him calm and making him participate in group activities as well and have seen some good changes in him. But need ur opinion on this issue. It will be a great help to the child first then us.

Good you want to help. Educate yourself about autism. Plenty of activities are available on the net. Sensitivity to noise is common in autism. One to one session would help.

My son is 3 and a half years old. He does not speak and is full of aggression. He expresses everything aggressively. If we say no for any thing he doesn't accept and starts crying. He keeps chewing everything, even the wall of the class. Doesn't sit still for even 10 second.

Get evaluation done. Find good pediatric psychiatrist and psychologist. Please get help asap.

My daughter is 5 years old ASD. She shows less moving around at home and when we take her to a new place she starts running and is uncontrollable what should I do for this?

Have help to keep an eye on her and let her explore. At home everything is just the same. New places interest children so let her explore as that’s the best way to learn.

Is it good to tell the child that he is diagnosed with ADHD. (Boy, 11 years)

At times awareness helps, but they should not use it to get away with work. Explain what is  the issue and why it’s there. What we have to do to work on it together and give confidence that it’s not just a problem. Explain the good side of it as well.

My son is 12 years old, his IQ is good but he doesn't write. All his class work books are incomplete, I need to go and take a copy of all books and make him study from the xerox. When asked why he does not write in class, he complains of hand pain. What should I do to make him write and also increase his concentration?

Find out why he does not write. Assessment needs to be done as could be genuine LD problems. Don’t waste any more time. Right help will increase his interest in writing, till then make him read and verbally explain what he understood.

My son is 11 years old and he has severe school refusal problem. He shows lots of tantrums when forced to school and thus we are not able to send him to school for a year. He is not interested in studying except playing, watching TV , although we have stopped giving him tv and gadgets. Are there any suggestions to solve the problem?

Don’t force, find why is the reluctance. Give him confidence that you are at his side. School is good for disciplined routine. Get external help if required and check with school on what is their observation.

How to cope up with low attentive students in the class? I am a teacher facing problems with such children.

Make them sit in front to start with, away from the window. Also engage them in different tasks.

I have a girl and a boy both 2.5 years old. The boy is diagnosed with autism and the girl is hyperactive. In both cases they just keep running around the class and it is very difficult to make them sit. The boy prefers to lie down on the floor or on the teacher's lap as he is not able to sit for a longer time. Also they both have a tendency of throwing things whatever they have in their hands.

You have plenty of time in hand to work with them. Early detection is good. Let teachers know what these two problems mean exactly. Educate them, keep a psychologist, remedial teacher always at hand. Stay well connected as we are blessed to be in a city like Pune where all these helps are available. Don’t get overwhelmed, stay calm all will be good. Right diagnosis right remediation are the keys to success.

I have a son who is almost 7 years old. He is ambidextrous too. He has learning difficulties. He gets confused and even though recognizes most of the phonics still can't read the word as a whole. Writing is another issue he faces. Initially it was told that he has fine motor issue so grip is not developed. Now grip has developed however writing is still a problem. Size of alphabets, writing between lines. Copying from board. For a first standard child he is finding it difficult to cope up with studies . What should we do. Do we get home tutors for such kid who can tutor to their needs and help them co relate. Or else what's the solution ? Please help.

Home tutor does not necessarily know how to help children with LD. Focus on reading first and then communication. Let vocabulary increase, play language games, let him enjoy studying and don’t worry too much. There is plenty of time in hand

Many times my daughter, 8years, can't find stuff that is kept just in front of her. How can this be improved

Get eyes checked. Could be focus issue. Use bright colours and clues to find things. It also could just be ignorance.

My child is 5.5 years and usually writes mirror images. He also lacks in concentration. Please give some suggestions on this.

Writing in bold print, with clay, in sand will help. Focused efforts to correct each mirror image letter needs to be taken.

How do I reduce hyperactivity in my 4 year old son. He is on GFCF and sugar free diet since one and a half years.

Channelise energy. Swimming, running helps in these cases.

How does sugar affect hyperactivity?

It is just one of the aspects. It pumps up energy but is not the only reason why child is hyperactive.

Can we as parents take lessons on how to tackle our kid from someone?

Sure. Parents are the best teachers and helping hands to children. It’s brilliant if you do so.

What is the good side of having ADHD or anything related to hyperactivity.

Children having ADHD are good in sports, they are good in hands on joys, can do sports professional y, can join defence and there are many more good sides to this.
