Structure of the Challenge

Beginner Fencing Experience

Age Group: 7 + years
Objective: Introduce kids to basic Fencing Concepts as a Sport

1. Welcome & Introduction (10 minutes)

  • Warm Greeting: Greet participants and their parents, creating an energetic and inclusive atmosphere.
  • Introduction to Fencing:
    • Briefly explain what fencing is and its origins.
    • Showcase the three types of fencing weapons: foil, épée, and sabre, explaining their differences.
  • Safety First: Outline basic safety rules and introduce protective gear (mask, jacket, gloves).
  • Quick Q&A: Address any questions kids or parents may have.

2. Warm-Up & Coordination Drills (10 minutes)

  • Stretching: Basic stretches to improve flexibility.
  • Footwork & Coordination Drills:
    • Introduce basic fencing footwork: the “en garde” stance, advancing, and retreating lunges
    • Fun activities like “mirror drills,” where kids mimic the instructor’s movements.

3. Introduction to Fencing Basics (15 minutes)

  • How to Hold a Weapon: Teach proper grip and weapon control using practice swords.
  • Basic Moves:
    • Simple thrusts (attacks).
    • Parry moves (defensive techniques).
  • Practice in pairs: Kids work in pairs to mimic attacks and defenses under instructor supervision.

4. Mini Fencing Games (15 minutes)

  • Target Practice:
    • Set up soft targets (e.g., balloons or foam boards) to encourage accuracy and focus.
  • Friendly Bouts:
    • Kids face off in short, supervised bouts using basic moves learned.
    • Encourage cheering and camaraderie to make it fun and engaging.

5. Wrap-Up & Cool Down (10 minutes)

  • Reflection: Gather kids in a circle and ask them what they enjoyed the most.
  • Demonstration:
    • Instructors perform a short fencing duel to inspire participants.
  • Certificates & Photos:
    • Take group photos to commemorate the experience.

Additional Notes

  • Ensure all equipment is sanitized and adjusted for each child.
  • Have a few assistants or volunteers to supervise safety and encourage shy kids to participate.
  • Encourage parents to watch and engage by taking photos and cheering their children on.

This one-hour session introduces kids to the elegance and excitement of fencing while emphasizing safety, fun, and teamwork!
