Structure of the Challenge

Beginner Robotics Experience: Creating a Windmill

Age Group: 6 + years
Objective: Introduce kids to basic robotics concepts through a fun and hands-on activity where they build and power a simple windmill.

1. Introduction (10 minutes)

Objective: Spark curiosity and provide context for the activity.

  • Welcome & Icebreaker:
    • Introduction of Robotics.
    • Greet the kids and ask, “Have you ever seen a windmill? What do you think it does?”
    • Show pictures or videos of real windmills and explain their purpose, such as generating energy or pumping water.
    • Share a fun fact: “Did you know windmills have been used for over 1,000 years to grind grain and make electricity?”
  • Overview of the Activity:
    • Explain that they’ll be creating their own windmill today using robotics tools and simple materials.
    • Briefly introduce the concept of motors and how they help machines move.

2. Activity 1: Assembling the Windmill (20 minutes)

Objective: Teach basic assembly skills and teamwork.

  • Setup:
    • Provide each child with a pre-organized kit that includes small gears, a motor, plastic or cardboard blades, a base, and connecting parts.
  • Guided Assembly:
    • Step 1: Build the base (guided by the instructor).
    • Step 2: Attach the motor and gears to the base.
    • Step 3: Connect the blades to the motor shaft to form the windmill.
  • Hands-On Learning:
    • Walk around to assist kids and ensure all connections are secure.
    • Use relatable terms like, “The motor is like the wind—it gives power to our windmill!”

3. Activity 2: Powering the Windmill (15 minutes)

Objective: Introduce basic robotics concepts and let kids see their creations in action.

  • Setup:
    • Provide a simple battery pack or power source to each child.
    • Explain how the motor needs electricity to work, like how our gadgets need charging.
  • Interactive Learning:
    • Help kids connect the motor to the power source.
    • Let them turn on the switch to see their windmill blades spin.
    • Encourage experimentation by adjusting the speed of the motor (if possible) or changing the blade angles.
  • Discussion:
    • Talk about how robots and machines use similar motors to perform tasks.

4. Wrap-Up (15 minutes)

Objective: Reflect, celebrate, and inspire further learning.

  • Show & Tell:
    • Gather the kids in a circle and let each child showcase their windmill.
    • Ask them how they’d like to use windmills in real life, encouraging imaginative responses.
  • Certificate & Souvenirs:
    • Hand out certificates of participation and small robot-themed stickers or badges.
    • Take a group photo with the kids holding their windmills.
  • Closing Words:
    • Thank them for their enthusiasm and encourage them to think about what other machines they’d like to build in the future.
    • Share information about upcoming robotics workshops for interested parents.

This hands-on experience combines creativity, basic engineering, and robotics concepts in a way that’s engaging and age-appropriate for young children
